As a NASCAR team owner, Matt Kaulig knows what it takes to build a championship-caliber race team. Earlier this month, he was able to connect with the racing team at the University of Akron. For 30 years, the Zips Racing team provided select engineering students at the University of Akron the ability to gain real-world engineering experience through the design, build, and operation of an SAE Formula car. Teams are faced with the challenge of orchestrating their entire operations. They must coordinate budgets, schedules, purchasing, designs, manufacturing, testings, and more.

The Impact of Zips Racing
As a proud University of Akron alum, Matt is thrilled to see fellow Zips learn what it takes to succeed on the track. Matt’s own NASCAR team, Kaulig Racing, is currently competing in NASCAR’s Xfinity Cup Series each weekend, with two top-10 drivers. The Zips Racing team is a student-based, top competing formula SAE Combustion team which competes internationally.
Established in 1989, the Zips Racing team was started to provide students with hands-on experience in the automotive industry. Students show how what they learn in their engineering classes can be applied to working in the real world. The University of Akron is home to the only Formula SAE Combustion team in Northeast Ohio. The team has competed nationally and internationally against collegiate powerhouses and is consistently ranked among the top winning teams. With a team consisting of 25 students with a wide range of backgrounds, they are always looking for student team participants, sponsors, and donors.
