As we continue to highlight tremendous organizations in Northeast Ohio, Fox 8’s Cleveland’s Own featured a fantastic group called Flashes of Hope.
Matt Kaulig sat down with its founder, Allison Clarke, to learn more about its humble beginnings and how it has expanded in recent years.
Founded by the parents of a child with cancer, through Flashes of Hope, the Clarke family has captured memorable moments of 50% of children diagnosed with cancer in the US.
Allison Clarke started it during her son’s first cancer treatment. Starting out in Northeast Ohio, they’ve been able to take meaningful photographs of 75,000 kids in 45 cities around the country.
For the families who lose their children, you can’t really put a price tag on what that photo means to them for many, many years to come.

In addition to portraits and “happy bags”–gifts to help lift the spirt of each child who participates–Flashes of Hope has been able to raise around $1 million for research annually.
“To put ourselves out of business; that would be our ultimate goal,” Clarke said.
